By day, Mervyn Cartwright appears to be just a very sleepy porcelain creature—round, snouty, and utterly harmless. His pudgy paws rest in front of him, his ears droop charmingly, and his golden teeth gleam faintly under the shop lights. He snoozes peacefully on the highest shelf of Madame Willoughby’s Cabinet of Curious Creatures, utterly still.
But don’t be fooled.
Because Mervyn leads a double life.
When the last bell tinkles and the lights go out, Mervyn’s eyes blink open. His tail curls with excitement. With a snort and a stretch, he hops down from his perch with the grace of a seasoned explorer. One by one, other porcelain pooches stir to life—Wiggles, Gertie, Clive, and Mo. All hand-crafted, all enchanted, and all loyal to Mervyn.
He is their leader, their planner, their bold-nosed commander.
Together they gallop on miniature adventures—playing hide and seek with Beryl the shop cat, having battles with tin soldiers, and once, famously, faced off with a very cross wind-up duck.
But when the morning sun begins to rise, Mervyn returns to his shelf, curls up, and resumes his usual performance—perfectly still, golden teeth gleaming, as if he’s never moved.
He would very much like to come and snooze on your shelf next. Not only because you seem like someone who appreciates a proper nap, but also because… well… your house looks like it might be full of wonderful secrets.
And Mervyn Cartwright loves a good secret.
